Biologists from Uzhhorod National University presented their research at the 15th Congress of the Ukrainian Botanical Society

From 30 September to 4 October, the 15th Congress of the Ukrainian Botanical Society was held at the Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University (Ivano-Frankivsk). The forum was organised by the Ukrainian Botanical Society of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the M.G. Kholodny Institute of Botany, Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University and Kherson State University.
During the congress, which took place in a hybrid format, research findings from leading scientists across all regions of Ukraine were presented.

In addition to the plenary session, participants worked in eight sections:
- mycology and lichenology;
- plant conservation;
- plant and fungal collections;
- breeding, introduction, and resource science;
- systematics and floristics of vascular plants;
- geobotany and plant ecology;
- algal and bryological studies;
- biotechnology, physiology and biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology.
The conference programme also included three round-table discussions: public science and the participation of amateurs in the study of plant diversity; scientific research in nature reserve areas; botany and ecology in secondary and higher education institutions.
Uzhhorod National University was represented at the congress by Yaroslava Hasynets, Dean of the Faculty of Biology; Roman Kish, Associate Professor of the Department of Botany; and Alina Huklyvska, a postgraduate student of the Department of Botany. The following papers were presented: ‘Embryological Research at Uzhhorod University: History and Current Status’ (Y. Hasynets, section: biotechnology, physiology and biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology) and ‘The diversity of biotopes in the Verkhniy Tysenskyi Basin (Transcarpathia)’ (R. Kish, section: geobotany and plant ecology).
Yaroslava Hasynets also took part in the round table ‘Botany and Ecology in Secondary and Higher Education’, during which, among other things, she highlighted the problem of a shortage of high-quality Ukrainian-language textbooks and teaching aids on basic biological disciplines, including botany. She proposed that colleagues from various higher education institutions and research organisations join forces to prepare new printed and electronic publications.

On the final day of the congress, botanists from Uzhhorod went on an excursion to the Dniester Regional Landscape Park, where they explored the flora and vegetation characteristic of the Dniester region within the ‘Dumka’ karst-cave complex and the Divich-Gora botanical nature reserve.

The Uzhhorod Botanical Department sincerely thanks the organisers for a high-quality, eventful and productive event, and wishes the newly elected president of the UBT, Y.P. Didukh, and his team fruitful and successful work!
